The Institute of Spanish Language and Culture offers classes that are small in size; in particular, the Spanish Language classes are taught using a communicative approach. Special attention is paid to the specific needs of each student so that all can take maximum advantage of whatever courses they are registered for.

SPANISH LANGUAGE

This course emphasizes the acquisition and development of the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

SPANISH CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION

The beginning level consists of a general introductory course to basic elements of Spanish culture including extensive vocabulary enrichment. It will be offered only during the first two weeks. The other levels include segments on Spanish literature, art, history and geography and will be offered during the entire four weeks.

BUSINESS SPANISH

This course covers acquisition and development of languages skills (especially in the area of vocabulary) needed to do business in Spanish speaking regions and countries. Areas studied are correspondence, marketing, sales, negotiations, banking services, human resources, etc. A minimum of eight students must be registered for either section.

A minimum of eight people will be required to activate this course.

SPANISH MYSTICISMM

This literature course, taught in either Spanish or English, is based on selected readings from the works of Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz. .

SURVEY OF SPANISH LITERATURE I & II

This survey literature course is offered in a two year sequence. The first course covers the X - XVII centuries and is offered odd-numbered years (2011), the second course covers the XVIII - XX centuries and is offered even-numbered years (2012).

MEDICAL SPANISH FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS

A course specifically designed for doctors, nurses, students and other health care professionals who need to know how to communicate with their patients.

A minimum of six students must be registered for this class.

Students may register for regular credit or audit the courses. Tuition fees are the same for either type of registration. On an exceptional basis, students are allowed to register for a 2 credit (20 hour) course during the first two or last two weeks.

For those interested, there are also several opportunities to do volunteer work.
